In the Community

People with developmental disabilities have advocated long and hard for the right to be included in their communities. Their voices have been heard. Their efforts have been recognized. New laws, policies and service definitions are creating a modern vision for the full and authentic inclusion of people with disabilities in society.

Community integration is giving a person with a developmental disability the opportunity to live the life he or she desires in the community. It includes the ability to develop friendships with people with and without disabilities, to have control over life choices and daily activities, and to explore options for where time is spent. It is not just merely living in the community; it is the pursuit of belonging in the community.

Community integration begins with person-centered planning- a variety of approaches that help a person identify what is meaningful in life. It involves asking questions that focus on a person’s strengths and desires and future possibilities. The common theme is that the person is the focus. Their hopes, dreams and goals are the priority.
