Diversity within the Cuyahoga County Board of DD
In 1967, the diverse community leaders who founded the Cuyahoga County Board of DD crossed cultural, religious and economic boundaries to make a difference through collective action. Today, diversity and inclusion remain vital to achieving our mission.
The Cuyahoga County Board of DD fosters and promotes an inclusive environment that leverages the unique contributions of diverse individuals and organizations in all aspects of our work. We know that by bringing diverse individuals and viewpoints together we can collectively and more effectively create opportunities for a better life for the individuals we support
The Cuyahoga County Board of DD takes the broadest possible view of diversity, going beyond visible differences to affirm the essence of all individuals, including the realities, background, experiences, skills, and perspectives that make each person he or she is. We engage the power of diverse talent and partners to create innovative solutions.
Diversity and inclusion are at the heart of what it means for people with developmental disabilities to live, learn, work, and play in the community
Diversity Value Statement
The Cuyahoga County Board of DD will foster an environment within its programs and services where the diversity of individuals with developmental disabilities, their families, staff and other service providers is respected and valued. We will foster an environment where people with developmental disabilities experience inclusion so they can live, learn, work, and play in the community.
(d-vûrs-t, d-) n.: the quality of being different or unique at the individual or group level. This includes age; ethnicity; gender; gender identity; language differences; nationality; parental status; physical, mental and developmental abilities; race; religion; sexual orientation; skin color; socio-economic status; work and behavioral styles; the perspectives of each individual shaped by their nation, experiences and culture—and more. Even when people appear the same on the outside, they are different!
(n-klzhn) n.: a strategy to leverage diversity. Diversity always exists in social systems. Inclusion, on the other hand, must be created. In order to leverage diversity, an environment must be created where people feel supported, listened to and able to do their personal best.
The purpose of the Diversity Committee is to support the mission of the Cuyahoga County Board of DD by:
- Developing programing and activities that enhance awareness and respect for the diversity of individuals who have developmental disabilities, their families, staff and other service providers.
- Developing the cultural competence of staff and other service providers.
