Advocacy Opportunities

Services for Independent Living offers an eight week leadership academy to help persons with disabilities gain skills needed to participate on community boards, committees and task forces.

Project STIR is a training program, offered by the Ohio Self Determination Association, for self advocates designed to provide individuals with the tools to advocate for themselves, mobilize others in advocacy, and gain leadership experiences.

Best Buddies Ambassadors Program offers people with and without developmental disabilities the opportunity to gain the public speaking skills, self-esteem and confidence needed to successfully advocate for themselves and others.

People First of Cuyahoga County

We are proud to support, along with the The Arc of Greater Cleveland, the local chapter of People First, a nationwide self-advocacy group that gives individuals with developmental disabilities training to build skills in decision-making so they can advocate for themselves.

The group is open to all individuals with developmental disabilities in Cuyahoga County. Meetings are held on the third Monday of the month (except January and February). All meetings are held from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the Cleveland Clinic Building (lower level), located at 5001 Rockside Rd. in Independence.

The 2020 People First meeting schedule will be available soon. Visit the Arc of Greater Cleveland's website to learn more.

The goals of People First are:

  • Community awareness
  • Teaching our communities about people with disabilities
  • Community support
  • Advocating for the supports people need to live, work and be a part of the community
  • Health insurance
  • Promoting various ways for self-advocates to work and obtain health insurance
